The Fool's Journey - Cups book

Post by Noel Eastwood »

Update: I've begun the second major edit to my new book 'Fool's Journey through the Tarot Cups'. It's looking good but it's about 10,000 words too long. I am aiming to make this series around 50,000 words, novella sized, not too long and not too short. For those who enjoy an epic fantasy with their Tarot lessons this is just right. For those who want to get to the meat of the Tarot themes and meanings it's just perfect. So that's my challange right now, to try to par down the excess words and tighten the plot some. Fortunately it won't affect the theme of the Cups element, Water, nor will it affect the card meanings in each chapter.

It's great to hear about the progress you're making with your new book, "Fool's Journey through the Tarot Cups." Balancing the length of a book while maintaining its essence and ensuring it delivers value to your readers can indeed be a challenging task.

Trimming a manuscript by 10,000 words while keeping the core elements intact requires a strategic approach. Here are some tips that might help you in this editing phase:

Identify Key Themes and Elements: Ensure every part of your book directly contributes to the main themes or the development of the Tarot Cups. This focus can help in deciding what's essential and what's not.

Cut Redundancies: Look for places where you might have repeated the same information or ideas. Sometimes, we reiterate points for emphasis, but they can often be condensed without losing impact.

Streamline Descriptions and Narratives: While rich descriptions can be engaging, they can also inflate word count. See if there are areas where you can tighten the narrative without losing the essence of the scene or character.

Review Subplots and Side Characters: If there are any tangential storylines or characters that don't directly contribute to the central theme or understanding of the Tarot Cups, consider reducing their prominence or removing them.

Focus on Clarity and Precision: Often, a more straightforward and concise way of saying something can be more powerful. Look for sentences that can be made more concise without losing their meaning.

Seek Feedback: Sometimes, having another set of eyes on your work can help identify parts that can be shortened or removed. Beta readers or a trusted editor can provide invaluable insights.

Read Aloud: Reading your work aloud can help you catch overly long sentences or unnecessary words that you might miss while reading silently.

Remember, while it's important to meet your word count goals, the quality of the content should always be your priority. Your readers will appreciate a well-crafted, tightly plotted book that delivers the essence of the Tarot Cups in a clear and engaging manner. Good luck with your editing process!
